Managing Director, Axenic
Terry is the Managing Director of the kick-arse NZ information security company, Axenic. He is a veteran presenter, mentor, and coach, and has a particular interest in helping young kiwi techies develop their more soft and squishy people skills.
Previously, Terry has led and presented in previous ITx conferences and the Microsoft Ignite architecture track for several years, developing a hardcore following of kiwi ICT architects and technologists interested in moving beyond interacting with 1s and 0s.
The events of 2020 turned the corporate world upside down. For the first time in our generation, large parts of the developed world needed to adapt to the concept of fully remote working. This has turned the concept of the modern workplace on its head; even for seriously old-school organisations where productivity had previously meant sitting at your workplace desk from 9-5.
In this session we’ll explore some of the practical lessons learnt by my small local information security consultancy, Axenic. We’ll cover how our team needed to adapt (both physically and emotionally) to enable full remote working, the skills that we needed to develop to make remote working ‘business as usual’ for ourselves and our customers, and finally the criteria that we are looking for in new staff members to support our future workforce to enable primarily and fully remote working.
You will come out of this session, having answers to the following questions:
1) What skills and personal attributes are employers looking for when recruiting for remote workers?
2) What type of work will and won’t work remotely, and why?
3) What are the technical, communication and facilitation skills that you should be developing?
4) Is remote working a good choice for your work style?
How can we survive and thrive in a world marked by volatility, uncertainty and ambiguity?
Our panel explores the world today and what we need as staff, students, leaders and most of all, people, to thrive in the new world we live in.
